There are so many kinds of facials out there that do different things – we provide over 10 of them just on our menu! It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed by gimmicky ingredients, medical jargon and bizarre procedures. When choosing a facial that’s right for you, here are some things to consider:
1 – The Basics
A good facial will usually consist of the following: cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, a mask and moisturizer. Extractions may seem scary – and yes, it can pinch – but, they are safe and help remove blackheads and whiteheads. Certain facials will also feature a massage; sometimes just focusing on the face, others, like our Renewal Therapy Facial, features a relaxing face, neck and shoulder massage. A great moisturizer is usually applied leaving your skin plump and luminous, temporarily smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Depending on your skin type and what benefits you want from the facial, some steps may be left out or feature other things like serums and peels, which is why it’s important to know your areas of concern.
2 – Areas of Concern
Facials are not magic, they don’t solve all your skincare issues in one session. But they do help repair damaged skin cells when done monthly or every couple of months, leading to visible results over time. Some focus on skin clearing, anti-aging, hydration, or firming and toning; facials that are designed for acne will usually feature acne fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid, while anti-aging facials will feature antioxidant and AHA rich ingredients. Consult with your aesthetician and be sure to tell them if you are sensitive to any kind of ingredients, and have them recommend a facial for your skin type.
3 – Timing
A major reason why people get facials is for the relaxation aspect of it. Depending on if the facial features a massage, mask, or other treatments that need to sit for a while, some can last over an hour. Be sure to give yourself enough time to really get the full effect of your facial. Our Signature Facial is a luxurious, deeply hydrating, pampering experience, meant to be enjoyed and savored, so it’s a 90 minute session. However, if you want something just as effective but in less than half that time, we have a few 30 – 15 minute sessions that feature powerful ingredients for visible and effective results.
4 – Expectations vs. Reality
While making facials a part of your skin care routine can help the look and condition of your skin, they are not permanent fixes to skin care problems. They will not completely get rid of acne or provide permanent lift to sagging skin. A good routine at home, wearing sunscreen, diet and exercise, and other good habits all help in addressing skin care issues on a long term basis. Facial also do not replace cosmetic or corrective procedures such as Botox, lasers or fillers. Even though they are not a permanent fix, when done on a regular basis, facials can help encourage healthy, young looking skin.
